Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

by Jennifer Luu

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the last and final book left in the amazingly magical series. Deathly Hallows not only met the fans expectations but exceeded it too. The plotline was extremely well done and although it was the last book, it kept the reader wondering, just like any other of the Harry Potter books do. The story just kept getting darker and darker. The road Harry had to take was full of twists and turns. Dumbledore’s shocking past was finally revealed as all the pieces of the book fell together. The book was constant battle after battle, death after death, injury after injury. The non-stop action keeps the reader rapidly turning the pages. The book has the perfect combination of fantasy, horror and romance. The anxiously anticipated kiss of Ron and Hermione was done spectacularly.

A Big Book Hits the Big Screen

By Stephanie Chin

It’s been on the New York Times Bestseller List three times in a row. It topped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows on its first day, and in about two years, it will hit the big screen! Twilight, published in 2005, is a sensational book by around thirty author Stephenie Meyer and millions of teens around the world have read it.

We know that most movies, such as “Eragon” and “Lord of the Rings” originally came from popular books but now it’s Twilight’s turn. The best-seller horror romance has been signed by Summit, an independent movie company, and they plan to work on it as soon as they can.

Stephenie seems to trust director Catherine Hardwicke and writer Melissa Rosenberg and readers, like me, expect a lot from them.

The main and most important thing about the movie that I think the readers care about, however, has to be the cast!

That is yet to be decided! Stephenie says she would like to see her main characters played by Emily Browning and Henry Cavill.

Personally, I would like to see Emily Browning star in the movie also, but with Gaspard Ulliel.

Dining With the Stars

by Gresa Shala

What would be better than dining with the stars? On October 30th, class 820 from the Academy of Journalism received a special holiday treat. To enhance our writing abilities and improve our knowledge of the career field of journalism, our I.S. 49ners took a little trip to the Dakota Diner on Forest Ave. to meet the Daily News’s very own staff of reporters and editors!

Class 820, along with one of our journalism teachers, Mrs.Keag and librarian Ms.Rodden, traveled using the bus and train to get to the diner.

Students were thrilled to be included in the trip. “I was so excited! I couldn’t believe that I was actually in the same room with the famous editors of the Daily News,” said student Theadora Hadzi.

Being reporters and writers of the Journalism Gazette, you can be sure that this trip has greatly inspired us in the career field of newspaper writing.

Over a plate of eggs sunny-side- up and hash browns, we listened to Daily News Chief Executive Officer, Marc Z. Kramer, talk about how they would like us to tell what we would like to see more in the paper and how it is important for the newspaper to have the voice of the public heard. Everyone present there was given a survey asking us to write about issues concerning Staten Island and the world in general, that we would like to read about more in the paper. See as there was only a small fraction representing Staten Island’s population at hand; there was a tremendous feedback. We talked about different issues from diseases such as Autism, senior citizens and Veteran’s rights and services, sports, baseball players (A-Rod) to the Iraqi War.

Apart from our class there were various groups present as well, such as the Red Hat society that consists of women 50 and older and the Pink Hat society along with Staten Island’s citizens.

Many of the Daily News’s top editors and writers spoke as well. Renowned sports cartoonist and 66- year old veteran of the newspaper, rallied up the crowd with stories of the Yankees and his own experiences with the newspaper. Brooklyn Bureau Chief JoAnne Wasserman and Boroughs Editor Steve McFarland also spoke at the event.

Although the fun isn’t over yet, before we left, our class was surprised by Mr. Kramer when he said that he would have a Daily News’s staffers come visit our class in school and speak to us in the approaching months and on top of that he would also give us a chance to shadow a reporter at work.

At the end of our stay we got to keep our Daily New Breakfast Club coffee mugs and we had a chance to get autographs from the Daily News staff. ** “Staten Island is the greatest borough in the city….it is its best kept secret.” –Dove???

Doing Big Things...While Being So Young

By Aaleiyh Kennedy

Chris Brown is only 18-years-old but is on his way to his second top CD.His first record or album was labeled “Chris Brown” and consisted of the top songs “Run It,” Gimme That,” “Yo (excuse me miss)” and others. After his first CD, he went on to work with Rihanna in “Umbrella” Remix and just came out with a new song “Kiss, Kiss” that will be on his new CD Exclusive. He also performed at the Video Music Awards (VMAs). He performed “Kiss, Kiss”and “Cinderella” and also did a wonderful Michael Jackson rendition.

I also give him his ‘props’ because when he performs he does not lip sync, like some celebrities, and gives it his all. He is a role model and many young girls have a crush on him!

Sneak Away

By Reeana Soodeo
From issue 3 winter 2006

Once upon a time in a secluded land, there was a girl named Isabella Rialto. Hey, that’s me! I am fourteen, and just to give you the 411, my parents are divorced. They filed for a divorce when I was just three. As I grew older, the lies between my parents grew bigger. Whenever I went to visit my father in Florida, the first thing he would do would make up a story about how my mother left them both and then lied in court. Afterward, my mother would acquaint me about the things my father did to her.

Two years after their divorce, my father got married again. Since then, he has been a workaholic. So most of time, I’m abandoned in my room.I learned a lot of information at the library, where I snuck off to while my father was at work, my step mom was at Bingo, and my stepsisters were at the mall. As a coincidence, I sit in the same chair everyday, with Mrs. Lachea, the librarian, watching over me. I started off reading the popular kid’s book “Curious George”. I decided that it was too easy so I went on to start reading “The Bridge to Teribithia”. Still, I concluded that it was still too easy for me. One day, I made a decision to go to the adult’s book section. Luckily, there was no one there except for Ben, the janitor. I saw a book that caught my eye. I couldn’t reach it, but there was a wooden chair right next to me. So, I grabbed the chair and reached for my book. Hmm. . . . Moby Dick? That should be an interesting book.

I headed for “my” chair. I read for a few minutes and got up to chapter 9. I just started to read chapter 10 when I heard the loud gong of the church bells signaling 7:00. Oh my god, I was late!!! Usually, my father gets home at 7:30 but my step mom and stepsisters arrived home at precisely 7 o’ clock.

I hastily ran to the front desk where Mrs. Lachea was stamping books. “Mrs. Lachea, please check this book out as quickly as possible. My family will be home any minute!” I hollered. Mrs. Lachea checked out the book instantly and I rushed through the entrance.

I almost tripped on a crack in the sidewalk on the way home. My heart was beating rapidly, my feet felt numb, and my face felt like paper in front of a fan. I was about two blocks away from my house. ‘I’m almost there’, I thought. Fortunately, I didn’t see any cars in the grimy driveway. I tried to slow myself down as I slowly stopped in front of the door. I searched my jacket pockets for my keys. There were only pieces of dust in my vacant pockets.

Fortunately, I knew where my father hid an extra set of keys. I looked under the welcome mat and found the keys.

The house was silent. I checked in the kitchen, dining room, and living room- no one. I tiptoed up the stairs and walked to my room in the attic. I read my new book for about ten minutes when I heard footsteps. I assumed it was my stepmother and her daughters so I ignored the noises.

A Withered Rose, an Empty Promise
By Theadora Hadzi

Thou gave me a rose
So red and full of life
Like the heart that beats in thy chest
But with this sweet rose, came a sweet promise
A promise that our love will last
Last as long as the beauty of a rose
But no matter how much thy can nurture it,
A rose will soon wither and die
Moreover, what will become of your promise?
Will it wither and die?
For I have not seen you
Have all you left me were a withered rose?
Was it nothing but an empty promise?

My Sister

She’s so innocent, sweet and kind. She’s one that’s hard to find. She can be selfish, greedy, and mean. But then again her mind is keen. She’s happy, silly, one to love.As caring as the angels above. Her face is as gentle as a kitten’s meow.I can’t stop loving her, for I know not how.
